Vitamin D linked to low coronavirus death rate

A new study has found an association between low average levels of vitamin D and high numbers of COVID-19 cases and mortality rates across 20 European countries. Vitamin D modulates the response of white blood cells, preventing them from releasing too many inflammatory cytokines. The COVID-19 virus is known to cause an excess of pro-inflammatory cytokines. more...

Giving blood thinners to severely ill Covid-19 patients is gaining ground

Treating Covid-19 patients with medicines to prevent blood clots might help reduce deaths in patients on ventilators, based on new observational data. There was a mortality difference among sicker patients who were on ventilators in intensive care units: 63% of those given anticoagulants survived versus 29% who did not get anticoagulants. Bleeding is a risk for patients who take anticoagulants, but the study found no significant difference between patients who did or did not receive anticoagulants. more...

Steroid drugs reduce deaths in severely ill COVID-19 patients

A new analysis from the World Health Organization finds that cheap, widely available steroid drugs help reduce deaths among severely ill coronavirus patients, shedding more light on the path to treating the virus. more...

The Covid-19 virus and the body’s ACE2 receptors

Faced with a disease the world had never seen before, physicians are learning as they go. By following the trail of ACE2 receptors, they are more and more prepared to look for, and treat, consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection throughout the body. more...
